Chapter One: Molly's Plan
The Burrow, Ottery St. Catchpole, Devon, West Country, England, Great Britain
February 1970
The war was starting up, whispers and rumors abounded about the Dark Lord Voldemort rising to power. Molly and Arthur had only been married about a year when she found out the news. Even in these dark times, Molly was excited because she'd always wanted children. She also wanted to surprise Arthur with the news.
To do that meant she needed to do something more than just 'we're having a baby' and what better way to do that then something Arthur would enjoy even after their baby was born? So she contacted a close friend from school and together the two women headed off into muggle London.
Granted, Molly had never been to muggle London -outside of going to catch the Hogwarts Express- but it wasn't so hard. She knew what she was looking for, she had her muggle-born friend to help her figure things out, and she had a few hours yet to find the perfect one.
It had taken her longer than she had expected to find what she was looking for, but she'd found it. Arriving home she set up her happy news present. They didn't have a lot of money, so she couldn't buy too much, but it was enough -in her opinion- to get the job done. Once the present was wrapped and placed right where her husband would be sitting when he came home Molly proceeded to start dinner.
Arthur came home tired from a long day. Whispers and rumors were growing about this Dark Lord and Arthur was nervous. What if something happened to him? Who would be there to take care of his dear Mollywobbles? What if something happened to his love? Thoughts and worries like this plagued him all the time. When he arrived home it was to the delicious smell of his wife's cooking and the happy humming his love did while she danced around the kitchen.
He couldn't put his finger on it, but there was something different about Molly today. She seemed...happier? Or maybe it was a glow around her that hadn't been there when he'd left this morning. Either way, it didn't stop him from pressing a quick kiss against her cheek (he'd learned long ago not to get in the way of her when she was cooking) and placed his briefcase in the living room. As he moved back into the kitchen his attention caught on a box.
It wasn't a big box. Rather small, wrapped in baby blue paper with a little pink box on top. There was also a card that simply said 'Surprise.'
"Dear," he called, waiting until it was obvious he had his wife's attention, "what's this box for?"
"Oh, nothing, just a little surprise I thought you might like," she said in one of those 'I know something you don't' tones of voice.
Always a curious man, Arthur sat in his seat and slowly unwrapped the box. Once the wrapping was off he noticed that the little box was covered in balloons and little carts? Even more curious now, he opened the box and let out a happy laugh. It was full of muggle things!
"Molly, what on earth?" he exclaimed happily, pulling things out.
There was a squeaky duck and a little bear with some kind of metal thing sticking out of the back of it and a tiny glass...thing. He was unsure of what either was for, but he was determined to find out and he was almost bouncing in his seat at the prospect of investigating the items. "These are amazing, Molly," he told her, happiness filling his voice.
The last thing in the little box was wrapped in a piece of thin paper. Slowly, he moved it out of the way and for a moment could only stare. It was a onsie. A very tiny, hand made onsie. And on the front it read 'Dad's Bestest Assistant' along with a little plug thing -like the ones he had a ton of out in his shed.
"I...Molly...is this...are you-" he couldn't even say the words as he looked up at his wife with wide eyes, only to see her staring at him with a rather nervous look.
"Surprise!" she said with a little 'tada' motion, "you're gonna be a daddy."
Arthur dropped the little onsie on the table and wrapped his wife in a hug, tears blurring his vision.
"We're gonna be parents! This is-this is-"
Instead of continuing to try to speak he simply pulled back and cupped his wife's face in both hands.
"You are the most amazing woman in the world and I love you."
Then he kissed her as tears rolled down both their cheeks.
