Chapter Text
Y/N POV:
"L," I screamed. "Open your eyes for me! Don't you dare give up on me! L!"
It didn't matter how much I screamed or begged. The pale-faced ravenette was dying, and he couldn't hold on much longer.
“I love you, Y/N." With those last words, he closed his eyes for the final time. Or so I thought.
~Months Earlier~
Y/N POV:
I put my chin on my hand as I stare out the classroom window. I couldn't help but feel jealous of the students talking outside. I hated being stuck in school on a lovely afternoon. I started to daydream about the walk home.
"L/N!" I heard the teacher shout, throwing me out of my daydream.
I stood facing my teacher and shouted, "Yes!"
"What's the answer?" He asked, pointing to the board.
I quickly answered the question, and after he told me it was correct, he started teaching again. After I sat down, I heard laughing coming from behind me. Knowing the owner of said laugh, I turned and playfully glared at my best friend, Light Yagami. He stuck out his tongue in response, and I turned around with amusement sparkling in my eyes. Light and I have been best friends since we were in diapers because our families were friends. Since the very beginning, we've been stuck at the hip. Our parents like to joke that we were twins in another life.
"Daydreaming again, are we?" Light asked a few minutes later as we left the classroom.
I rolled my eyes. "Don't act like you weren't doing the same," I said. "We both know we can't pay attention during that class."
"Well," He said with a teasing smile. "Only one of us truly needs to pay attention in that class. And I'm not her."
I only rolled my eyes, knowing he was teasing me. Although he was right, I was the only one who should be worried about focusing on that class. I spread my arms and twirled around as we finally made it outside, earning a laugh from Light.
I grinned as I turned back to look at him.
"You look so goofy," Light said teasingly.
"My face isn't a mirror, Light," I shot back.
"That's not what the girls say," He retorts.
"Damn," I said, faking disappointment. "You got me there."
It was true that Light was more attractive than the other guys at our school. He had light brown hair and matching, caring eyes. He was reasonably tall, not to mention smart. He was the ideal man for everyone but me. It was one of the main reasons we were still friends. Light knew that because I didn't see him as more than a friend, he could be his true self with me. And in a world where fake people constantly surround you, that is everything.
"Hey, what's that?" I asked, pointing to a black object on the ground.
Light walked over and picked up the object. I walked next to him to see what he was holding. He held a simple black notebook with the words 'Death Note' written on the cover. I didn't know why, but I instantly felt terrible about it. The book had a strange sense of death around it. I was about to tell Light to leave it behind, but he was already looking through it.
"This book belongs to a Death God," Light said before flipping through it more.
I felt a shudder go through me at those words. I hugged myself as I looked around, almost expecting a Death God to appear suddenly.
“Light," I said, making him look down at me. "We should leave this book here. I have a bad feeling about it."
Light opened his mouth to argue, but seeing how serious I was, he nodded. He then gently set the book on the ground. I looked around again, feeling like I was being watched. Light, seeing how uncomfortable I was, quickly grabbed my hand. He squeezed it lightly before letting go, and we started walking home. On the way home, I tried shoving that notebook to the back of my mind. But I couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
That night, a criminal died of a mysterious heart attack while holding a nursery school hostage. Nobody knew that this criminal would be the first in many to pass by these mysterious heart attacks or other mysterious deaths. However, it wasn't possible to know what caused the notebook or what would become the norm in the following months and years. If only I could go back to the beginning, then all the deaths that followed over the years wouldn't have happened. If only I hadn't pointed out that book to Light. If only.
