Summary
Severus Snape. A name well known, yet seldom spoken aloud without disdain. At the start of sixth year, he vanished from Hogwarts without explanation. His mother had died over the winter break, and his father, ashamed of what he saw as a fragile and unmanly son, sent him away to a harsh, military-style training camp to “make a man of him.”
Few at Hogwarts noticed his absence. None cared enough to wonder, except for one boy who should have despised him most: James Potter. James found himself restless and strangely unsettled. The rivalry he had once clung to felt incomplete without Snape. The more he tried to focus on Lily Evans, the more his thoughts betrayed him, straying instead to the dark-haired boy whose glares he once knew by heart.
When Severus returned months later, he was changed. His frame was stronger, his style sharper, and faint scars hinted at the trials he had endured. James could barely recognise him, and that unsettled him more than he cared to admit. Replaced by an unknowable distance that gnawed at him.
Now James faced a question he dared not answer: would he be content with the girl he had always claimed to want? Or had the figure in his dreams never been her at all?
