Summary
Scar, better known as the beloved superhero Hot Guy, has been doing this gig for almost twenty years now, protecting the city from the dangerous creatures and machines released from the under-city by hybrids and mutants bent on causing chaos and mayhem just for the sake of it. Or so, that’s the information he’s running on, which he recognizes is a little skewed, but he has no choice but to go with it.
That is, until an avian hybrid picks up the vigilante lifestyle and wedges himself into Scar’s daily hero-ing duties with annoying persistence.
Maybe he needs to rethink his career choices after all. Getting saved from being crushed by a collapsing building after a green monster exploded by a beautiful man with wings wearing thigh highs and heels would certainly do that to a person.
{In which Scar is trying to balance listening to his conscience with doing his job, Grian is having more fun flirting than he is fighting, and things always go back to the status quo, day by day…even if they don’t always want them too.}

Summary
He didn’t usually come back this late. Grian should’ve realized that was mistake number one. The rift he used to go back and forth from his apartment emerged out from an access door into a sketchy back alleyway, but his apartment was only a ten-minute walk, and he'd figured it would be fine. He had to teach a lecture tomorrow, and while he could've stayed home and flown back up in the morning, he would've had to rush back to his apartment for his notes and laptop anyway, so he'd figured it would be fine. That had lasted up until some drunken thugs happened to be hanging out in the alleyway and slammed him into the brick wall with his wings pinned. Folded wings with force against a hard surface? Painful. Very, very painful.
When he screamed, he managed to catch the attention of the local superhero, though, so there's that.
It's just a shame his voice was so unnervingly familiar.{In which Scar saves his crush from a mugging, Doc is overprotective of his pesky bird for a good reason, and Grian gets the beginnings of a (terribly) wonderful idea.}

Summary
Grian had convened with Pearl and Jimmy for a preening session. All had been well, the same usual relaxing time spent with his sister and cousin, but one thing had led to another, which had led to this. All on the offhanded mention that Grian had made about his recent rescue at the hands of Hot Guy. He’d been explaining to them how Hot Guy had been so caring toward him, carried him back to his apartment and everything, and they’d been prodding at him because the way he was talking made it sound like he’d developed an instantaneous crush on the superhero. Then things had taken a turn.
People loved Hot Guy...maybe they could find a way to love them, too? It had spiraled from there.
{In which Pearl designs a costume, Jimmy panics but what else is new, Grian goes on a test flight, and Scar finds out he has some adorable competition.}

Summary
Scar couldn’t believe he’d actually hit him. It had been almost a month since the new winged vigilante had come on the scene, and Scar wasn’t really sure what to make of him. His outfit was vivacious to say the least, his charisma and talent were the real deal, and honestly, the fact that the Council was foaming at the mouth to bring him in was rubbing Scar the wrong way. For as frustrating and beguiling as he was, Scar couldn’t claim he disliked this so-called Cute Guy. Which is why when he’d been in pursuit over the city skyline after the black-and-pink clad vigilante had swooped in on a monster outbreak from a rift, firing the strange energy bolts from his pink pistols, Scar had found a moments hesitation when he’d drawn back his bowstring. Yet still, he’d activated the biotech grafted into his eyes, seamlessly communicating with his visor, taken his aim, and fired.
Hot Guy rarely missed a shot when he was truly trying to hit it.
{In which Scar tries to change perspectives, Grian needs some aloe vera, the city is already scary enough, and who knows which one they're actually protecting?}

Summary
Scott arrived for the agency's Halloween party with a mission.
It was a golden opportunity, after all, to try and strike up a conversation with the handsome blonde writer from the fifth floor. Jimmy was exactly his type. He was tall, blonde, handsome, and complicated. Reserved to a fault, friendly to everyone, on good terms with the whole agency, and yet Scott had yet to meet anyone who'd claim to be friends with the guy.
But that all changed tonight.
He'd made sure he looked gorgeous in his costume, the agency always went hard for Halloween, so it would definitely be a wild party, and furthermore, it was the only festivity hosted by the agency that Jimmy ever bothered to attend. This time he'd do it. This time he'd find his way closer, shift away from just workplace acquaintances who happened to take the same shuttle route home.
That wasn't very easy, considering the last route was being honest.
Scott had always been terrible at that.(In which Scott wants to cry, but that'd mess up his eyeliner, Jimmy got bullied into dressing up like a cowboy, and both of them are looking at each other with stars in their eyes, a shame that's not an easy thing to see.)

Summary
Grian really thought he might have a handle on this whole superhero gig. Or, like, the illegal vigilante gig. Because he was...illegal. Anyway. The most annoying part has been having to deal with the old guard of the city, Hot Guy, whose identity he'd known for months as his co-worker Scar, who he may or may not have an enormous crush on. Luckily, he's been able to keep his distance so far. That is, until he sees Scar take a nasty fall from a skyscraper fighting monsters, and bash his head on the way down.
{In which Grian doesn't know concussion protocol, Scar falls for him rather literally, and biotech can fix minor brain trauma no sweat, but dealing with repressed feelings is something else altogether}

Summary
Jimmy felt he'd been doing a pretty good job in the over-city.
He'd mainly kept to himself; a bone-deep fear of discovery and being chucked down the nearest gutter, where he'd again be unable to see the blue sky or feel the sun, was enough to ensure a self-imposed isolation.
That didn't mean he was disliked, even if he didn't seem to notice how his friendly yet reserved demeanor, not to mention golden-blonde hair and tall, handsome stature, had earned him plenty of fans at the news agency he worked at.
One of those fans was a journalist from a different floor, who always seemed to find an excuse to bring his notes to Jimmy for write-ups.
And maybe Jimmy kept it to himself, but his hair and eyes reminded him of the sky.
The sky was one of his favorite things, but Jimmy thought that maybe Scott could overtake it.
Scott seemed like he intended to try.{In which Jimmy can't see past his moon-sized crush on Scott, Scott has been flirting for literal years and decides he's run out of patience, and Grian is the best accidental wingman anyone could hope for.}

Summary
Scott was over the moon.
This past weekend, he’d taken Jimmy on a date. By the end of the day, they were dating. It was everything Scott had been grappling with himself to pursue for years now, ever since he'd first seen Jimmy leaning in the doorway of his office, the sunlight from the window making his hair light up like gold. He was going to get it right this time. Even if Jimmy had more hurdles for him to clear than any relationship he'd slithered his way into before, this time, he'd do his all to deserve this gorgeous man who'd lowered his well-known reservations to take his hand. Metaphorically, that is, because it seemed Jimmy had some struggles that were buried but not forgotten. And as Scott was soon to learn, he'd be facing down quite the fearsome adversary in the form of his biggest rival, who'd been teasing him for not noticing the family resemblance.
But it was fine. He'd endure it. If it were for Jimmy, then it was all worth it.{In which Scott fears for his life, Pearl enters overprotective big sister mode, Jimmy curses his network connection, Etho gets the cold shoulder, and all Tango wants to do is go get some cookies.}

Summary
Jimmy was used to the pain. When he’d first started coming to the over-city, he’d been a kid. First year of high school he’d still been small. Still shorter than both Grian and Pearl, who’d towed him along into the sunlight. Back then, he’d been able to fold his wings into the tight column against his back and hold them there easily. It hadn’t been the most comfortable thing in the world, but he’d slowly started to get used to it.
Then he’d hit a growth spurt.
And alongside the suffering of backaches more severe than either of his cousins suffered, not like he intended to let them in on that, was the reality of six cheap pleather belts he'd bought at a thrift store when he was seventeen. And now? With the sky above his head and the sky across the table from him, with hair fluffy like spun sugar, it was even more so. A twisted feather and some phantom knives in his wing roots weren't going to slow him down.
Because Scott and the sky were both worth it.
{In which Jimmy weighs the pros and cons of stripping in his office, Scott isn't in the loop, but he's got the spirit, and hey, at least the bakery had bar-height tables.}

Summary
Scott had always considered himself a pretty observant person.
He wouldn’t claim it was one of his best traits, but he tried to pay attention. As far as assumptions went, as a reporter, he had to retain verbal info well, especially when it was of value to him. But somehow, he hadn’t noticed it until almost two months into their relationship that Jimmy was incredibly tight-lipped, in a deceiving sort of way. In the sort of way that made it difficult to tell where the lines in the sand were. It wasn't like Scott would pride himself on recognizing that sort of thing. A picnic date and a question game might give him some answers, but at times, he worries it's all precarious, seconds from ruin. Even though he wanted this more than anything he'd ever had so easily before.
Perhaps he ought to give some more credit. Maybe Jimmy has been paying closer attention than he thought.{In which Scott has to swallow his pride, Jimmy can't get over how pretty his boyfriend is, and Pearl just wants her little cousin to be happy, even if it means she has to make nice with her biggest rival.}

Katherine should’ve been a teacher! She had been a teacher, and she’d loved it! That is, until she’d gotten let go of due to budget cuts. That had resulted in her moving back to the city, which hadn’t been high on her list of things to do. She’d loved the small-town lifestyle. Out in nature, fresh air and no rifts tearing holes in the ground or monsters appearing out of the blue.
Yeah, those were real problems in the city.
Yet if she hadn't moved back, hadn't been let go of, hadn't been so distracted planning out in vivid detail the pity party she would throw for herself when she got back to her cramped studio apartment, then she wouldn't have taken the wrong turn. Wouldn't have managed to be in just the wrong place at just the right time.
Tumbled through a rift, crashed into a flooded tunnel, and met the love of her life.Ok ok, back it up. We're getting ahead of things. Shelby. A wrong turn in the right place, and she'd met Shelby. So maybe it had all been worth it, after all.
{In which Katherine wants several pints of ice cream, Shelby isn't picking up social cues, no one had been planning to go for a swim, and a flower can be beautiful even if it blooms in the shadows}

Summary
Sometimes, Cub wondered how he'd stumbled his way here. His best friend of fifteen years, since they met as college freshmen and randomized roommates, was a high-flying superhero. As for him? He found his guy-in-the-chair duties to be pretty fulfilling. If they kept Scar from having to deal with the biotech institute ever again, well, it would be worth it. The council also forked over a pretty big check every month to ensure Hot Guy stayed happy, and Cub, being the one and only employee of the local hero's tech lab, got a good cut. That wasn't the point, though, of course, and it never was. It had been such bad luck, really, or maybe good fortune? Depended how you looked at it.
Cub was nearly blind, though, so looking wasn't exactly his strong suit. But do you need someone to listen? He could certainly be all ears.{In which Cub pretty much constantly has a headache, Scar flubs his dual identity situation by no fault of his own, and it's a shame, isn't it? Secrets are such finicky things.}

Summary
Scar had gone through a lot in twenty-odd years as a government-funded superhero. He'd fought a whole cornucopia of monsters that emerged from the under-city and dealt with enough turmoil on his conscience to last a lifetime. All that time and all those skills he'd gathered had something teasing at the back of his mind. Pointedly jabbing at him there that something was off, something he wasn't picking up on.
Maybe he'd been crushing on his coworker, a fellow professor at the city university, a little too hard. And perhaps the wayward flirting from the local winged vigilante made his heart quicken unexpectedly.
But seriously, it was impossible. Just because they laughed the same, smiled the same, and had the same mannerisms, that didn't mean anything.
Just because they both made him feel all sorts of complicated, hot, writhing emotions in his chest wasn't enough!
After all, it just couldn't be.
Grian and Cute Guy could not possibly be the same person.{In which Scar trips over his own tongue and impales himself on his curiosity on the way down, Grian is sick, tired, overworked, and caffeine addicted, and the two of them would really benefit from a full eight-hours sleep.}

Summary
Joel was not fragile. He was not pathetic. He was not broken. He did not need to be treated like he was made of glass.
Sure, he had a torn wing. Yeah, he'd never fly again. Ok, maybe sometimes when he saw certain colors or thought about certain things too hard, he felt the clawing sense of helplessness rising in his throat, and a phantom of pain he hadn't felt since he was seventeen years old.
Maybe he was still scared to fly with one of his friends, because it felt like if he did so, he'd be admitting he was weak, when that obviously was not the case.
He was strong. Strong enough to have pushed through all this for years and years now, even if once in awhile, it could bubble to the surface and wreck him all over again. At least he had Lizzie to keep his spirits high, and some good friends that had always been willing to lend him their wings.{In which Joel never grew out of his bad boy phase, Lizzie has very poor foresight, Grian affectionately harasses his friends, Jimmy gets roped into stretching his wings, and healing is one thing that can never be put on a time limit.}

Grian hadn't ever been expecting someone to follow through on courting ritual with him. He'd been crushing hard on his co-worker turned crime-fighting partner for years at this point, and Scar certainly had no idea that avians had that sort of thing. Specific little thoughtful gestures that would send a sign that whoever was doing the deed was interested. And as much as Grian would adore being spoiled by Scar performing all these little things that made his wings ruffle under his red sweater, pleased and basking in the attention, he knew it would never happen. Scar didn't know about avian courtship ritual.
He didn't.
Grian knew that he didn't know.
So if he didn't, why was he doing every ritual so perfectly?{In which Scar stumbles ass-backward into performing all 5 of the typical avian courtship gestures in his attempts at wooing Grian, Grian is desperately trying to convince himself he's still in the friend zone, Jimmy's busy having his own relationship crisis, and Pearl will meddle all she needs if it'll get these idiots together already.}

Summary
Joe’s Hyper Shack was a popular place, and Joe was very proud of it. It was the most popular coffee shop in the university quarter of the city, and was always bustling with activity, though it did have it's moments of tranquility. He made drinks that went from sugary flavor bombs to motor oil that had the Joe Hill's guarantee to keep you awake for twenty four hours straight...those did great during finals week! He made fun of his longest-running employee for being a wannabe goth boy, he decorated with psychedelic colors, and he played his favorite game in the world. That is, considering he was the owner of a coffee shop across the street from a university, he'd been witness to many 'hey, let's grab coffee' situations over the years. He'd grown adept at nailing down when couples were a sure thing or if they were bound to fall through. And nothing made him happier than suckering Hypno in to betting a couple bucks on his hunches.

Summary
The cold was always a welcome relief to Jimmy.
What he hadn't been bracing for as autumn cooled the air was Scott accidentally fulfilling an avian courtship ritual by gifting him a hand-knitted scarf. Gazing up at him with a lopsided smile and fondness that Jimmy didn't know how to deal with, even if they'd been dating a few months now. A few months of tension, distance, and fear spiking uninvited at every unwarned brush of their hands. The best thing Jimmy had fumbled into after so many years hiding in the over-city could end within the span of a heartbeat. Could be any heartbeat, all it would take is a kiss lasting too long, or a touch lingering in the wrong place. If Jimmy fell too hard for those sky-blue eyes, they could convince him to do just about anything. Even expose golden feathers to the light of the sun.
He wouldn't do that, because Jimmy doesn't hate his wings.
But he's afraid of what he'd do if Scott did.{In which Jimmy is dealing with internalized childhood trauma, Scott is just trying to be a supportive boyfriend, Grian decides to act like a decent big cousin for five seconds, and this is all to give Jimmy enough courage to let touches linger, no matter the risk.}

Summary
Scar had never been in a relationship.
Or, well, wind it back. He’d never been in a committed relationship. The flings from his twenties for some attractive company, just for a weekend or two, didn't count. This was different. He was dating Grian, his friend and co-worker turned crime-fighting partner. It had gotten complicated, but now he had him, he had the person he'd so hopelessly pursued for almost five years now, and they were well overdue to go on their first proper date. Scar wanted everything to be perfect. He wanted to hold hands and stroll around and pull Grian, so much smaller than him, beneath an arm, drag him table to table at the food festival they were attending this weekend. He wanted that so badly. Unfortunately, his biotech is for the good of the city. Even if, only just this once, he wished it would do some good for him. Maybe that was just too much to ask? Or maybe he'd have to learn he never needed it, not for Grian, not for himself, and a day can be perfect even if nothing goes perfectly at all.
{In which Scar buries his frustrations in baked goods, Grian threatens to dump him in a fountain, a car chase nearly runs them both over, and yeah, it was still the best first date ever.}

Summary
Martyn had moved to the city pretty much on a whim.
He'd come trying to outrun the shadows that'd loomed over him for five years now, all tangled up in the realization of all his worst qualities the day he'd buried a knife in his best friend's back. Figuratively speaking. Then again, it wasn't beyond metaphor to say that in every word and sideways smile, he carried a dagger in one hand, and in the other, he offered a rose. When he'd moved here, he'd hoped maybe he could free himself, start fresh in a new place, swearing off any chance at romance, for what had he done but prove he couldn't be trusted? A traitor with honey-soaked words.
On his first day, he meets Ren, the lead professor in the drama department. And he wonders, distinctly, what he'd done to deserve having someone so gorgeous set right before his eyes, untouchable, out of reach. Or so he'd say, but then, it wasn't like he'd put his arm out yet.{In which Martyn wants to finally get things right, Ren is desperately playing dumb, and a few wayward sheets of paper are all it takes to fling a new opportunity in both of their faces. If they'll take it, though, is entirely up to them.}
