Summary
[The cell is silent now, save for the soft hum of metal on sea reverberating around him, the steady clangs of a ship in motion. In the cold, Heng, kneeling, struggles to hold his own flame. He draws it in close, cupping it like a prayer—precious fragment of divinity that it must be now—close to his body, close to his core. His hands shake. The flame strains, sputters, but persists.
He tries to remember what Fire Sage Fujisato had told him, in a low voice once, on a rain-soaked evening in Gosizi—how to guide a soul to Agni when there is no body, no ashes, no sacred fire. How to stand at the edge of nothing and still believe.
So Heng sits through the long, bitter night, his back against frozen steel, the flame no larger than a plum blossom in his hands. And he thinks. He thinks about his mother. About Yaso. About the names of soldiers whispered and forgotten. About Lu Ten.
And—
Zuko.
Zuko,
Zuko—[spark:catch:cold-fire:lightning:ozone-in-his-mouth]—Zuko.]
or,
Jee remembers Fire Sage Fujisato's words about guiding a soul to Agni without a body.
