His voice trembled as the words left his mouth. He had screamed those promises once—over and over—crying out to the heavens, to the lake, to anyone who would listen. He had sworn to remember Arthur, to never let his memory fade. But what did it matter now?

It was almost nine years ago, and John Marston had found acceptance in Arthur being gone, despite what he initially believed as him having accepted it already. But it didn’t stop him from thinking about the man who saved him and his family; it likely never would. It didn’t stop him from feeling a gnaw ache in his heart, sore enough for him to lightly tug onto it through his vest. For a time when John wanted no involvement in any conversation surrounding Arthur, that he was gone and that there was nothing more to it - perhaps he was more so trying to convince someone else of that notion rather than his wife and son.
Or: John goes to visit Arthur's grave as usual, only to see a familiar face standing before his grave. The two reconnect and have a heart-to-heart over their mutual loss.

Well for everyone but Merlin, for Merlin it has changed everything and is anything but plain and Simple. It’s been a week since Merlin watched Mordred run his sword through Arthur, the memory sticks with him. Racked with guilt and gut-wrenching pain Merlin try’s to end it all. Not before the knights stop him though to his chagrin. They yell. They scream. They argue. Then they leave. All except Gwaine, someone had to keep an eye on him didn't they? Merlin wants him to shout at him, wants him to punch him but he doesn’t. Instead he places something on the table.

“Go see him, get some closure and come back the Merlin I used to know.”
So, he does.Or the one where Merlin adventures out to see Arthur’s ghost , they comfort each other, they argue , classic Merthur really . It’s a weird kind of hurt comfort , reunion with ghosts and Merlin’s attempts to bring him back to life.
