Hiccup had tracked every scratch, dent, and wobble in Toothless’s fin from the moment he tried giving him his freedom. Sometimes, he checks it weekly. Other times? Daily.
It all depends on how many reckless dives they’ve pulled lately—and how often Toothless grins at him after something snaps. The dragon always knows when it’s about to break. He just likes to see Hiccup fuss.
So when Hiccup builds a self-flying tail, meant to allow Toothless to live independently…
Toothless lets him finish it, keeps it even, all the way up until they defeat Grimmel.
He just never planned for it to be a permanent thing.
