As Leiland was about to discover, however, the new monarch had a very different celebration in mind and a treasure he wasn't willing to surrender without a fight.
Leiland was tired of cringing. Tired of making himself small for scraps of love when there was a feast on offer. Markus deserved better than that.

Five days away from Markus’ seventeenth birthday, Tavian calls him to the throne room. He smiles calmly when Markus walks in. He’s not on his throne, but standing instead at the large map table in the center of the throne room, candles lit around the edges to illuminate the map as the light dimmed outside in twilight.
His brother looks every inch the king he is, which makes Markus want to scowl whenever he sees him. His hair was braided through thoroughly with gold and silver trinkets, and they clinked together with each turn of his head. His outfit, which was casual (as casual as a king could get away with, anyway) was silk and finely-curled leather, decorated with more accents of gold and gemstones. The crown was perched neatly on his head, and the sight of it made Markus burn on the inside.
“Markus.” Tavian motioned for him to come closer, his tone disgustingly beatific. “Come here, I’ve got a job for you.”OR
Markus’ older brother Tavian sends him out on a scouting mission that goes terribly wrong. As the days pass and no sign of a rescue is forthcoming, can Markus hold onto the hope that his family will rescue him? Or has he well and truly been abandoned?
