Summary
The League wasn’t ever supposed to be something that lasted all that long for Dabi. He joined because his curiosity got the better of him, somehow managing to outweigh the part of him that knows he’ll always be better off alone and should stop pretending otherwise.
He only agreed to stay at the hideout with them because they aren’t charging him rent. It’s not like he shares the same buddy-buddy feelings towards them that the others seem to experience. It’s just a different place to sleep with the added bonus of keeping him from having to wear himself out traveling here for meetings all the time.
A means to an end—is how it begins anyway. But then, bit by bit, that starts to change without him even realizing it.

Until it all comes crashing down around him, and all he wants is his mom.
Years later he calls her a few times a week, never saying a word, but listening to her talk about her day to the stranger on the phone. Until he's dying in an alleyway. He calls her like every other time, but he speaks for the first time since he started calling... to say goodbye. And he hangs up before she ever gets a word in. It's poetic in a way, he thinks, for their roles to have switched for their last call.

That could have been the end of it. In another life, it had been. In that life, Touya had lost his phone somewhere, or maybe he’d never had it to begin with; an easy lie to soothe Shouto until he was long gone. But in this life, things went ever so slightly differently. In this life, Touya held onto his phone when he lost literally everything else. Any time of the day or night, if Shouto called or texted, Touya answered.

Kurogiri fixes him with flat, yellow eyes. “You seem to care an awfully large amount for someone who hates heroes, Dabi.”
He meets that flat gaze head on and pushes the burning warmth of the bonfire his heart beats in his chest to one side, and shakes his head in reply.
“There are no heroes in this building right now.”
