One day, the situation with Max's parents becomes worse. David comes to the rescue.

Max's dad screamed and cursed, suddenly throwing the glass bottle near Max's legs, hitting the wall and shattering loudly. It had never gotten like this before. His parents were neglectful, not abusive. This terrified max.
His mother screamed back, though not bothering to talk about the now puddled alcohol and glass near her son's feet. Max could barely make out the jumbled words they were screaming to each other until his dad pointed at him.
"You're both ungrateful! I work my ass off to make this family work and all I get is a sorry excuse of a son with an attitude and a whore of a wife that can't even leave me the fuck alone!" He screamed. She screamed back, but Max couldn't make out the words with how much blood is rushing his ears.
"Please, don't get me started! He's just as useless as his fucking mother!" The man screamed back. He pushed past her, causing her to hit the corner of the couch and walked out, slamming the door behind him.
Max wanted to go to his room. He wanted to put his headphones on and listen to music, watch TV, anything. But he couldn't move. He couldn't even cry.

Slowly, processing all the information that David fed him, Max let it settle and digest.
Max understood what he meant. He absently thought back to the first few weeks of summer, where he had made the decision that he was going to break David’s spirit, no matter what it took, and felt a weight drop in his stomach.
Even then, David handled that situation the best he could, and now he could put the picture together.
No matter how hard he had tried back then, every plot, every scheme, every successful prank that, back home, would have his ass in a casket faster than you could blink, David never broke, never once snapped, and always regained that pep in his step no matter how hard he’d been put through the wringer just hours before.
You can’t change people, no matter how much you want it, no matter how hard you try.
