Summary
His three closest friends are dead and the ones that survived are half a world away when Bilbo is wrenched back into the middle of the adventure he thought he had just concluded.
He wakes in Laketown to discover the Ring entranced him while he was weakened by sickness; showing him visions of the future in an attempt to scare him off entering the mountain.
Instead, Bilbo intends to use his foresight to spare his dwarves their terrible fate, if only he didn’t regain consciousness just in time to witness Smaug’s wrath first hand.
In short:
An expanded ending to the Hobbit. Canon compliant in an “it was just a dream” way.
