All twelve of Hans's older brothers had been murdered over the previous twelve years, and the perpetrator was still at large. To make matters worse, the youngest Westergaard seemed to be involved in every single instance, barely escaping death himself each time. Determined to find out if her ex-fiancé was responsible for his brothers' deaths, or if higher powers were at play, Anna sets out on a journey into the unknown.
What she discovers is a gruesome tale of loss and revenge. At its centre is a prince whose mind has been shattered into thirteen pieces. While others cast the fractured remains aside, Anna found her heart among his scattered pieces. But can she fix what has been broken, or will the truth paint an even more horrific picture than what lies on the surface?

Tired of having to take care of so many children, Hans’ parents decide to send him away to be fostered by another noble family. Fortunately for Hans, his foster family is of the morally upstanding sort and their positive influence helps him grow up to be a good man with many admirable qualities.
However, this idyllic upbringing is cut short when Hans tragically loses his foster family and is forced to return to the Southern Isles where a series of strange events and a mass uprising forced them to flee.
Meanwhile the king and queen of Arendelle decide isolation would do more harm than good, so they rescinds the closed door policy, allowing both sisters to have relatively normal childhoods. However, the strict regimen of royal life is too much for Anna, and one day, after a particularly nasty fight with Agnarr, she runs away from home.
Elsa, on the other hand, is not faring any better as she is constantly being pressured to wed by her father who wants to marry her off to a prince or a king, while juggling the responsibilities of the crown heiress.
Due to their vastly different status, it was unlikely that their paths would ever cross, and yet fate works in mysterious ways.

After his treason at Queen Elsa’s coronation, Hans Westergaard was sent back to the Southern Isles. Only a few weeks later, a letter arrived in Arendelle to inform the royal family that Prince Hans had been stripped of his title and thrown into a prison called “Wermutstropfen”. A secluded prison island where escape is impossible. Despite Hans’s horrendous actions, Elsa agreed to trade with the Southern Isles as her sudden winter caused a great loss in crops and trade partners for Arendelle.
Five years later, Anna and Elsa set out for a political visit to the Isles, unable to politely refuse their invitation any longer. However, the visit is cut short as they bear witness to a coup d’etat led by none other than the ex-prince himself. Whatever his motivation might be, Elsa is sure to stop the men's dangerous ambitions. But some things are easier said than done, and the truth is often not simply black or white.
