Summary
The forest is ash. Calli stands there taking it in. The sky is a mottled grey. Ash snows down from above. She feels it in her hair as she cradles the bird in her arms. It feels too bright for this, she thinks. The bird seems rather comfortable where it is.
Calli hesitates. She leans down to press a kiss on the bird's head.
“Stay safe, okay?” She whispers.
She sets the bird down, a single beating heart in a grave of life.
