Leonardo was glad Gema had answered the phone. He was glad that it hadn’t been him to collapse on the studio floor, sagging to the knees, hand pressed over the mouth to try to stifle the tears that had welled up.
We need to go now, she had said. Leonardo had frowned. And where are we going? Gema was already packing her bag, already covering his palette, already sloppily rinsing his brushes and throwing them on the drying rack. The hospital, she said. She did not have to elaborate. He understood.
