Casey swallowed again and glanced out at the house that was billowing with smoke. That front walk, the feeling of the stone cutting into his knee as he tripped and fell, his father’s angry voice chasing him out of the house. That front door, clicking shut ominously as it trapped him inside. That upstairs window, where he used to sit and look out, waiting for the yelling downstairs to stop.
He closed his eyes, allowing himself a moment to rest his head against the cool glass.
“Okay,” he heard himself say, hoping the others didn’t hear the waver in his voice. “Let’s go.”

His world fades out for a moment, everything going fuzzy. He blinks and tries to talk, but his tongue is heavy and his jaw feels wired shut. Matt swallows convulsively, trying to find the right thing to say, but the tones drop a split second later, calling out Squad, Truck and Ambo.

Matt tore out of the bed, barely making it to the adjoining bathroom before he’d fallen to his knees and vomited into the toilet.
His fingers spasmed against the porcelain.
They were not covered in blood, sliding over his father’s cold, hard skin. They were not covered in blood, slipping on the phone and making it hard to dial 911. They were not covered in blood, leaving marks on the carpet as he hunched over and vomited all over the floor.
