Summary
Before there was Cinder Fall, there was Cinder. And before there was Cinder, there was Ella.
And Ella was considered auraless.
Most children unlocked their auras around 6 years old. 8 was considered late. 10, terribly so. At 12, you are considered auraless. Ella was 11.
She still had a year to go. A full year to try, but her mother did not want to hear it. She didn't want to waste anymore resources on her. The winters were getting colder and with the dust shortage, it would be better to sell Ella and net a profit, then to continue emptying her already pitiful wallet trying to keep the heat on.
The people of Atlas unlocked their auras at 6. They needed too. It is their aura that warms them in the bitter climate. Those who don't often freeze. And Ella was freezing. Constantly so.
