Summary
“Oh Jack,” she whispered, and moved to pull off of him, but his hands tightened around her waist and she relented. “Jack, what have I done?”
He soothed her, “Shh, it was wonderful.”
“I didn’t ask you.”
“It was wonderful.”
“I didn’t ASK you, Jack. It was wrong.”
And he knew she was right, but couldn’t care. “Yes,” he murmured, “you were wrong to do it, and I should have stopped you. I didn’t.”

Summary
A gala, a smuggling ring, and one very reluctant inspector in a tuxedo. Phryne thinks it’s the perfect recipe for adventure. Jack thinks it’s trouble—especially when every smile she gives another man chips away at his restraint. And the most dangerous part of the night may be what he feels, not what they find.

Summary
All day it had been like waiting for the whistle. For the order to go over the top and face the guns. That long, dull, terrifying wait when there was nothing to do but dread. The morning news on the radio had carried the story that Phryne had been reported missing in Jerusalem, then there had been silence. Jack had asked around, numb with fear, and found out from a friend at the Argus that there was an embargo on the news that had been put in place too late. Tom had speculated that it was so the family could be notified first, but all he’d been told was to sit on it until told otherwise. He’d spent all day praying for a miracle, for a cheerful “Aviatrix found safe and sound in a shisha cafe” or even a disapproving “The Honourable Phryne Fisher has been arrested in Jerusalem”, dreading the alternative.
Now the family had been notified.Jack's world ends when he's told that Phryne has been killed in Palestine. Then it gets weird when she cables to say that she's coming home immediately. Cables Mac, because she hasn't spoken to Jack since their last argument, after which she packed up her bags and went haring off to Europe to solve the first case that came to hand.
