“Yeah, you’re right,” Jet bit back, no hesitation. “Didn’t even know your fucking name. Had to learn that from someone else. You know, I liked you, man. I –”
He cut himself off before that thought had time to flower, and he glared at the floor, shaking his head. He wasn’t going to give him that satisfaction. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, it stung. So, he left it just like it was, hanging there in the air.
It seemed to have zapped the energy from Zuko, at least, stunned silent. His gaze fell to the floor, ashamed, and… blushing? And Jet tried to pretend that didn’t make him feel anything at all.
Summary: Jet survived in Ba Sing Se. On his way to reunite with his gang and join the Avatar, he is forced to contemplate his morality. He is pitted against situations that question his understanding of the humanity of the Fire Nation, including the uncertain acquisition of an orphaned Fire Nation baby, as well as being forced to accompany none other than the Prince of the Fire Nation himself.

“What can I do to make it up to you?” he asks quietly, his voice controlled.
“You really want to know?” Jet sneers, and he gets in Zuko’s face, intimidating, furious.
“Maybe you could reconquer Ba Sing Se in the name of the Earth King! Or…Oh, I know! You could bring my parents back!” he says, slamming his shoulder into Zuko’s as he walks away.

Summary
In the next few minutes Jet witnesses the tension in Zuko’s prone, shaking frame head towards a peak. It’s odd to see how his features go slack, the perennially sullen mask that Zuko’s had on ever since Jet met him finally falling away- not in relief but in surrender, like he can do nothing else but submit to the pain. Zuko's chest rises in jerky bursts, a shudder of starts and stops that’s frankly disturbing to watch.
Sokka reaches out to gently tousle the scruffy hair, but Zuko makes a sound that’s somewhere between a whimper and a grunt and shifts weakly to curl on his side, so Sokka lets his hand fall back instead.
It should be satisfying to watch an ashmaker suffer this much, but after all he's learnt tonight, what Jet feels is a lot less like vindication and a lot more like sympathy.

Jet asks Zuko to join the Freedom Fighters a different way, surprising Zuko. It starts a drastic change for Zuko and eventually for Jet. It changes how things unfold in Ba Sing Se. It changes what happens as they enter the Fire Nation-the very place where existing as a couple could mean death for Zuko and Jet.
