Diluc had heard the story a thousand times, growing up. “Lord Barbatos,” he said loftily, “was a guest at my christening. He blessed me with the virtue of obedience.”
Kaeya tensed up, all at once. “Wait, who?” he said hoarsely.
“Lord Barbatos, God of Freedom. He’s Mondstadt’s Archon,” said Diluc with importance. Kaeya would have to know these things, soon, which meant it was Diluc’s duty as a loyal child of Mondstadt to tell him.
“I know who he is,” said Kaeya, even though he had just asked. “Hold on—he cursed you to be like this?”
“Blessed me,” Diluc clarified, “technically speaking.”
"Fucking Archons," said Kaeya with feeling.

Soon after they were born, one of the twins was promised to Rex Lapis (a Teyvatan deity, the Dragon King of Liyue and High King of Teyvat) as a spouse, to foster an alliance between Celestia and Teyvat, and to consolidate power in the face of growing threats from the Abyss Order, as well as the expansionist Tsaritsa and her scheming Harbingers. By all accounts, Rex Lapis is wise, benevolent, and unerringly just. But it is also said that he is hard-hearted, and incapable of love. Many years have passed since the contract was made. Princess Lumine has been abducted and slain by the Lord of the Abyss. Prince Aether's father, the Celestial King, forbade him looking into his sister's death, not wanting to lose both children. But Aether has just come of age and is sent to Teyvat, to become the spouse of this Dragon King. Perhaps now he will be able to discover the truth of what happened to his sister.

Kaeya moves on instinct, before he can stop himself his free hand is on Diluc’s head peppering delicate little scritches at the nape of Diluc’s neck, his weak spot, just how he liked it when he was upset. “Hush, little songbird.” He was playing dirty, he knew. This was a line he shouldn’t dare cross. He never would’ve, but something about Diluc, maybe his conviction was infectious for he always felt a touch bolder when he was around. “Hold still or I’ll restrain you myself. You’ve broken a blood feather. It needs to be removed.” If Diluc wasn’t going to take care of himself properly, Kaeya would gladly assume the role. He couldn’t risk Diluc thrashing around and hurting himself in his struggle.
Kaeya decides to drop by Dawn Winery after missing his beloved bartender, but when he finds Diluc in the middle of molting he ends up getting into more than he bargained for.
