He pretended to consider Marcus’ words, letting him tie his own noose. “It seems I’m missing something. Please, do go on.” He noted the way Miriam’s eyes widened a fraction from the workbench she’d moved to after excusing herself, watching Marcus intently as if she could transpose a little self preservation into his head. Indeed it seemed everyone knew what would soon take place except for his impertinent, headstrong child. Matthew gestured, leaning back a little on his stool.
“It wasn’t impulsive. I knew we needed the DNA markers, and I knew that if she understood why we were asking she’d come around. So, you see, it’s really not as bad as you think it is.”
“You’re right,” Matthew agreed with a nod, watching Marcus relax and break into a bright smile before swinging the hammer down. “It’s worse. Not only did you put the only person who has successfully accessed Ashmole 782 in decades at risk, you did it knowing full well what I would have to say about it. You manipulated her.”

Marcus never meant for anyone to set fire to anything. Really. He just wanted to give voice to the voiceless, to stand for something in a world where too many people stayed silent. So yes, maybe he took on the name Captain Swing. Maybe he wrote a few anonymous letters. Maybe things got... a bit out of hand.

As he spoke, Matthew reached up a hand to slide Marcus braces over his shoulders and down to hang at his knees. Next came the button on his trousers, embarrassing enough to have him taking a step back. “Stay,” Matthew warned, the order sharp and final as he tugged Marcus forward to his original spot.
“Now, let’s see if I can give you some clarity on my expectations so that you know what you owe these good officers an apology for.” Whether Matthew thought the officers were good was questionable but Marcus wisely decided now wasn’t the time to point this out to him. Then again, he wouldn’t have had time anyway because his trousers were being tugged down to pool at his ankles and then he was finding himself in an all-too-familiar position with his face flaming.

Or Marcus gets himself arrested while bootlegging moonshine over state borders while Matthew is away on a trip. Matthew isn't thrilled to be collecting him from jail yet again.
