Summary
In Cairhien, Elayne Trakand governs the city as the Band of the Red Hand grows under Mat Cauthon's command. Rand al'Thor has sent out a public amnesty for men who can channel while, in private, he and his trusted companions must decide where to focus their attention, as rumors swirl about dangers in Andor and Illian.
What if this were a battle? Thom had asked, after they'd laid the situation out before him, the true extent of what they were facing against the Forsaken. Cairhien is abuzz with your victories. So, General Cauthon, what advice would you give a man in Rand's position?
And Mat wasn't a general, far from it, but too many of them lived in his head now, in bits and pieces of memories. So he knew that a confrontation could come in many forms. Given the dangers facing them — best to go for distraction and a feint, and then a knife in the ribs, literal or metaphorical. That was Mat's advice.
