I have taken various liberties with timelines and whatever else I felt like taking liberties with because fan fiction lets me do that. ❤️

Summary
This short story covers the fallout from the Mephisto case in Season 4. It focuses on Max's recovery from being shot, and Oskar's disillusionment with the police force. Max is frustrated by how long it's taking to heal, while Oskar has started to question everything about his career. Underlying their unhappiness is a fear of impending war and the knowledge that life will never be the same again. Both Max and Oskar are at a fork in the road and need to make some profound changes. Max makes a proposal that will lead them in a new and different direction -- but will Oskar agree to it?

Max and Oskar are taking a long overdue vacation from work. Max arranges to have their portrait taken together, and his sister recommends a photographer she knows with a private studio at his elderly parents' country house, far outside Vienna. Max, Oskar and Leah travel down together, expecting to be there for one night only. But things take a sinister turn at the strange old house, which is inhabited by several odd and eccentric characters, and what they thought would be a short stay turns into a murder inquiry and paranormal investigation rolled into one.
