Summary
It’s an awful day.
Mel doesn’t know exactly why she gets like this, but sometimes her senses are just dialed up to a thousand, and the fluorescent lights and frantic sounds of the E.D. make her want to vomit. (Well, they always a little bit make her want to vomit, but sometimes they make her actually pretty sure she’s going to have to run to the bathroom and vomit).
That’s bad enough, but then sometimes, she gets a patient who notices she’s a little off and wants to personally inform her of their feelings about it.
~~~
A patient takes issue with Mel. Langdon is there.
Summary
Frank stops on his tracks when he sees a familiar face in central 4.
“Miss Mel?” He says, entering the room.
“Uh, hi?” she looks a little confused, blinking at him. “It’s nice to see you Dr.–”
“Langdon,” he fills in. “Frank Langdon.”
Summary
"Gloria is downstairs which means it’s crisis mode in the ER. Well, for some people. One person.
That’s probably more accurate.
Gloria is downstairs so Robby is in crisis.
When isn’t he though? That man seems to have the resilience of a soaking-wet chihuahua when it comes to having conversations with half the people in the ER. Cassie thinks his take is skewed because Frank is one of the people Robby doesn’t want to talk to, but he’s not convinced."
OR
Robby's trying to hide from Gloria behind a desk, Frank's surprised he's considered immature with that glowing example, and Gloria's trying to roll out a new peer review measure that's sure to ruin everyone's flow. Just a typical day in the ER.
Summary
Things have been good, lately.
Trinity has been good. She likes going to work—likes the thrill of particularly difficult cases, likes the easy back-and-forth she’s starting to build with her coworkers, even likes arguing with Langdon. She likes her little apartment and she likes that she gets to share it with Dennis. (It’s way cleaner, now, and she eats real food half the time. And she has something to do in the evenings other than think about everything she’s lost).
Things have been good.
She should’ve fucking known what would happen if she let her guard down.
~~~
Trinity is cornered on her way home from work. She gets out of it with a stab wound and a whole new wave of old trauma. (And of course, her least favorite coworker is the only one there to talk her down.)

Summary
“Let me go in there,” Trinity says, trying to reach around him to the door. “Let me talk to Mel.”
Langdon frowns. “I think she wants some space.”
“Fuck off, she wants some space. She wants me there,” Trinity retorts. “I’m Trinity Santos, I fix everything.”
~~~
Langdon seems to be under the impression that he gets to look out for Mel, which is some bullshit, because that's Trinity's job, thank you very much.
“One of Robby’s demands for me to return to full responsibility is that I go to couples therapy. And Abby is refusing. I was kind of hoping you would go in her place.”
“Oh.”
Mel and Langdon go to couples therapy.
Summary
Frank might not be married anymore, but Mel still can't be sure how he feels about her.
Mel might be his best friend, but Frank is pretty sure asking for more would be too much.
Maybe they'll be pining away forever? Maybe someone will finally make a move?
Either way, you know someone in the pitt is going to make money off that spread.Series
Santos walks in just as Frank finishes injecting his Zofran — trying to work through his chemo.
She gets the wrong idea.
(Or, Trinity has never managed to keep a goldfish alive, so moving onto a senior resident is probably a bad call).
Mel is trying to hold it together, but she's increasingly struggling with caregiver burnout. When she's seriously assaulted by a patient during the night shift, it's the final straw.
Seeing Mel's at her breaking point, Frank whisks her away to a lakeside cabin where she can recuperate, he can look after her, and maybe - just maybe - Mel can let some of her carefully constructed walls come down.
Summary
Perhaps Frank should’ve always known this; he and Mel worked in an equilibrium, balancing each other out in all aspects.
And perhaps Frank should’ve known all along, because he was getting better.
Summary
"The kitchen cabinet is covered in stains. They aren’t clear from standing, blended into the grain, but on the floor the odd marks and splatters are obvious, little memories ground into the wood.
The door hangs at an odd angle now, half open, only hinged at the bottom. A sticky red-brown wetness stains the outside corner, running over the other marks.
Her heartbeat matches a throbbing deep in her skull, blood sluggishly dripping from her temple. Mel can track its path down her face like a second skin, tight and itchy."
Summary
He’d been drawn to her from the beginning, even that first day. The other students had their gifts, but Mel’s enthusiasm and utter competence on the floor was like no one else’s. She was special. Seeing her treated badly when she was just trying to do her job upset him, even if he couldn’t find the words to say as much out loud.
Summary
“—and I know that there’s Becca and Tanner and Millie to consider, but I was wondering if you maybe wanted to move in? Together? With me?”
Mel blinks. He certainly doesn’t look like he’s having a stroke.
“Frank, why would we move in together?”
“I thought it might be nice,” he shrugs here, acting nonchalant even though Mel can see the tension in his jaw. “To take that next step in our relationship.”
“Frank, what are you talking about? We’re not in a relationship?”
At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”
What.
Or, Frank thinks Mel doesn’t do physical touch.
Or, Mel doesn’t realize they’ve been dating for nine months. -
Summary
Frank Langdon is a divorced FBI agent trying to keep up with child support for his four-year-old twins—demanding kids he doesn’t get to see as often as he’d like. His job barely gives him a second to breathe, and now he’s been assigned to train a rookie fresh out of the academy: Dennis Whitaker, a guy so lacking in confidence and so clumsy it almost feels dangerous.
Their boss, Robby—short for Robinavitch—hands them what’s supposed to be a simple assignment. Nothing complicated. Just keep an eye on the two sisters of a known Pittsburgh mobster. Easy. Until Trinity Santos shows up. The chaotic best friend with a loud mouth and a bad attitude, who flips out and accuses them of being stalkers.
