Charlie freezes, certain that he’s hallucinating. “Er, sorry?”
“Nick Nelson.” Mr. Farouk turns the screen of his desktop so Charlie can catch a glimpse of the photo he’s pulled up.
Nick Nelson stares back at him, his beaming face red and sweaty and covered in streaks of mud. He is also, most notably, hoisting up last year’s rugby league Challenge Cup trophy in his arms, balanced precariously on his team’s shoulders after an astonishing win by the Leeds Rhinos he’d undoubtedly contributed to.
Charlie begins to feel faint.
Or: In which Charlie and Nick become nothing more than acquaintances back in Truham, instead crossing paths again in their adulthood as a budding journalist tasked with writing a feature on a rising rugby star.

Summary
Charlie hadn't really considered what he was going to do with a degree in classics, but interviewing actors about film releases for Press Gauntlet magazine had not been on the list. Still, he took his job seriously and tried to do the best interviews he could
Nick has been pushed into acting from a young age by his father, but he loved it anyway. Except press interviews. If he never had to sit in a room and answer the same questions over and over again, that would make his life perfect. But one interviewer made the process slightly less awful.

Things are great in the city-dome of Heaven. Everyone stops aging around 30 and physical illness and disease have been eradicated, so no one dies of natural causes. Future careers are chosen in pre-school and the better you are at your area of study, the sooner you pass your challenge, the less you have to work. Required work hours get you basic housing, food, necessities, and entertainment; overtime gets you perks. It's Heaven. And Heaven's not as great as it seems.
