Ruby Harper, a quirky local artist, and Sidney Snell are tasked with decorating the community Christmas tree - an undertaking that predictably garners the disapproval of the city council. Sarah Mannington, a mysterious herbalist, sets up shop on Market Shipborough's high street. Her father, Charles, becomes smitten with Gloria. Lyle once again finds himself defending Henny Leach in court, all the while battling nerves about meeting Emily's parents for the first time. Meanwhile, Annie is growing increasingly impatient as giving Henry a sibling seems to be taking much longer than she had hoped.
