Summary
“Don’t they know what they will face in Ismere?” he searches Arthur’s own eyes, looking for some sign of recognition. That field may have held no snow and the man been a stranger, but he had no doubts in the capabilities of the witch. He feared her near as much as this nameless shadow.
“Yeah, of course, but a warrior learns to enjoy each day as it comes.” Arthur says decisively.
He looks away. He’d been trying to give Arthur days for so long. Every month, every week, every dawn, clawing against the fate that seemed to force itself through the castle stones and wind itself after their paths through the trees. The man’s life was predestined, fixed, great, but so fragile. And Merlin, with all the power of the will of the world cupped into his palm, could do nothing against the folly and fears of men.
“Come and have some food.”
He doesn’t want to. But this was his king, and this was his command. Merlin knew what he was, and he went to his destiny willingly, having long given over any idea of resistance to his place. This is what he must pretend to be. Obediently, he follows after, and lets the voices and games of his king’s companions lull him into distraction.

Summary
She had always watched them, her brother and his Knights, grew up with them, and loved them, even before her mother had been ripped away from her and Arthur. With her father long ago killed in Battle, and her mother murdered by her own people, Arthur, and his Knights were the last family she had left. And she'd kill for them. Even betray Rome.
Tristan was quiet, never bantered around with women in the open as the others did so carelessly in front of her. His eyes had always drifted to the one woman he thought he could never have. The young sister of Arthur Castus, Arwen.
