Erik and Charles were classmates in their preteen years.
Erik is a small, shy boy who often falls victim to the school bullies because of his second-hand clothes and glasses. Charles, on the other hand, is very popular and protects Erik from the bullies. Charles, however, lives a terrible home life full of abuse and indifference. The two boys become very close and protect each other. Charles turns to Erik when his family becomes too much for him, and Erik defends Charles from the other kids at school.
Something terrible happens to Erik, so his family has to move from the city and leave Charles behind.
The two friends don't see each other for five years, until they meet again in college. Erik has changed, though, and Charles can no longer see him as the shy boy who was his former best friend. He would love to know why.Series

He flipped through the rest of the file, gathering reports of a ship that couldn’t be traced to any crime, but nonetheless always seemed at the center of it. In between the blacked out walls of text was an out-of-focus polaroid. It was blurry, clearly taken with haste. Charles grimaced when he realized what he was looking at.
“Oh, God.”
The picture was of severed tails, hanging like butchered carcasses in a slaughterhouse. Some looked whale-like, others scaled, but the shape of them was undeniably not those of the sea creatures they superficially resembled.

Summary
During his time with Shaw, he had tried to escape but only once. The consequences of that attempt were so great that he wouldn’t have tried to escape again, even if he could.
He had been strapped to a metal table, metal half-cuffs that came from the table were slipped around his wrists and ankles holding him down. One wrapped around his head and neck too.
The metal was little more than a taunt, trying to show him that he could get out, if only he could control his powers. After all, that was what Shaw had always been after, Erik using his powers and being stronger and better.
The saw was metal too as Herr Doktor pressed it against his right leg, right above his knee, and began to push and pull it back and forth as the teeth of the saw dug into his flesh. He kept going and going, cutting deeper into his body, the pain increased with each second.

Summary
There were plenty of old myths out there, thoughts about what would happen to an omega when their alpha died. The honest answer was, more often than not, nothing. Charles wasn’t going to be driven to madness, lost, and scared of the world. He wasn't going to follow Shaw into an early grave.
If he had been in love, maybe things would’ve been different, but he couldn’t find it in himself to be anything other than relieved.
What was going to happen though was almost as dark in some cases. When an alpha who had claimed an omega died the omega was then given to the closest living family member.

He had thought, once, maybe childishly, that he would get used to the torture that he was kept in. That Shaw’s words and actions would no longer hurt the way they had in the beginning and his body would get used to the strain he was in but that hadn’t happened. At one time, he had even thought that this wouldn’t be forever. That one day, maybe when he became an adult, Shaw would let him go. Even if he had been kicked out and left homeless, it would have been an improvement but that day still hadn’t come.
At eighteen, Erik had been with Shaw for the last six years after his mother had died and he had no one else in his life.
