Summary
Erik is a firm believer in the fact that children deserve to know and be loved by both of their parents, even if one of those parents has a criminal record. The court needs proof Erik can be decent enough of a father morally and financially, though, and Erik knows he has changes and improvements to make.
Part of that means he should search for an extra job in order to afford a better apartment and keep his car. To his surprise, a job has apparently already found him, and it’s not one he can refuse.
The Child Protective Services worker on Erik’s visitation rights case seems optimistic, but Erik himself isn’t so sure now.

Erik and Charles were classmates in their preteen years.
Erik is a small, shy boy who often falls victim to the school bullies because of his second-hand clothes and glasses. Charles, on the other hand, is very popular and protects Erik from the bullies. Charles, however, lives a terrible home life full of abuse and indifference. The two boys become very close and protect each other. Charles turns to Erik when his family becomes too much for him, and Erik defends Charles from the other kids at school.
Something terrible happens to Erik, so his family has to move from the city and leave Charles behind.
The two friends don't see each other for five years, until they meet again in college. Erik has changed, though, and Charles can no longer see him as the shy boy who was his former best friend. He would love to know why.Series

Failed scholar-official Charles Xavier is having a crisis of sincerity. When he failed on his path to have everything he was taught to want, he fell back to irony and wit to carve a life for himself. When he meets the overly-serious Erik Lehnsherr, a renowned and successful man that has everything Charles wishes he didn't want, how is it that he only sees himself reflected in those grey eyes?
I despise autobiographical writing, and yet I can't seem to keep myself out of this one. So aside from a plot synopsis, and I'm really sorry there's barely any plot at all, I'll do my best to express the emotion that forced me against my will to write this fic below:
The world is bizarre and terrible, and it's so easy to find ourselves becoming bizarre and unreal with it. But nature is real and sincere, and witless. And this awful feeling in my chest is real, too. So why is it that when I long for something real, like I'm starving, like that feeling when you haven't had a vegetable in ages and your body is just begging for something substantial, why is it that I still reach for my wit first, and scorn the New Sincerity?
