Summary
Drica, a black, goth dropout who lives in a haze of smoke, neon, and self-destruction, finds her only escape in Between Blood and Starlight—a video game that transpires on a colonized planet outside the Earth. Tentative interest mushrooms into obsession after she encounters Yaeres, a shy, pink-hued alien girl who becomes the center of Drica's fantasies and solitude. Amidst nights of drunkenness, lost friends, and memories of her dysfunctional family, Yaeres is her sole constant comfort. But Drica's infatuation becomes perverse—she creates fanfics, buys merchandise, and gets lost totally in this cyber love. One night, after she took a copy of the game from a gas station, she finds the unthinkable: her friend dies after handling the case, and then later, when trying to play, Drica's body begins to turn against her. As she drifts into unconsciousness, she is listening to the sound of a voice not of this world—Angelo, Between Blood and Starlight's hero, calling out her name—calling her towards a world that she never thought she could step into.
