The first signs of another upcoming war have started to show. Rumours of Nazi Germany experimenting with both Darwinist and Clanker technology to create superhuman soldiers, force Alek to break out of the peaceful life he and Deryn have built, and take matters into his own hands.
He'd turn the whole world upside down if only to make sure their children will never relive the hell he and Deryn did.

Summary
The year is 1918. Deryn and Alek have made a happy life for themselves in the Zoological Society of London, filled with adventure, research, and- most importantly- each other.
That life is shaken when their latest assignment takes them to the Darwinist heart of America to infiltrate the Eugenics Record Office and unravel a project to fabricate a genetically superior human being. Deryn is forced to resume her old disguise to make the infiltration work, and Alek finds himself struggling to keep their relationship a secret.
As more and more wrinkles pile on to themselves, Alek and Deryn are both forced to rethink who they were when they first met. And discover just how much further their relationship can go.

And as the war rages on, we come to see just how involved our hero and heroine, were involved in the secret side of the victories the allied powers achieved. This is an epilogue of lengthy proportions, as we see the lives of Alek and Deryn as they grow together in the shadows of one of the most significant wars of the century.
