‘He had seen the ring sitting in his jewellery box, the purple stone a deep, rich colour, beautifully faceted to reflect the light. He could imagine how it would look, glittering on Ed’s hand, the warm gold against his brown skin, a piece of his love for Ed to carry with him always.’

The bookstore had always been Maya's hiding place.
Long before she was a firefighter, long before she knew how to stand tall in the middle of a storm, she used to slip between the aisles after school, heart bruised, shoulders tight, and disappear into the quiet. Some kids went home to warm kitchens and parents who asked about their day. Maya went to the place that smelled like old pages and cinnamon tea.

Summary
Kiara was in fifth grade when she first heard that the woman's uterus is a garden.
That's what her health teacher told the class—a woman with boho skirts, curly hair, and bright red glasses whose goal it was to uplift young girls.
A place where life is supposed to grow. Flowers and herbs and fruit. Things that bring joy and happiness.
She said it like a woman's value was tied to giving birth to children—to bloom, to bear fruit, to be nurturing and beautiful.
Kiara didn't understand it then.
Since the first time she got her period exactly a week after her tenth birthday, her garden only grew thorns.
