Yan Xiaohan goes on a walk one day and doesn’t return until hours and hours later, long past when the sun has already set. He shows up at their door absolutely drenched, rain droplets on his eyelashes, tracing down the slopes of his nose and his jaw.
Cradled in his arms is an equally soaked, pathetic-looking kitten.
Fu Shen leans against the doorframe to take some pressure off his aching knees. “Really?” he asks.
But then the kitten blinks its eyes open, and all he sees is green, green, green. Twin green eyes, like two trumpet-vine jade pendants nestled in a box under their bed, where all their precious belongings are stored, and oh.
“I couldn’t leave it out there,” says Yan Xiaohan, and yeah, Fu Shen probably wouldn’t be able to either.
