Summary
It started with a comment, a friendly suggestion really. Sam didnt mean anything negative by it, quite the opposite. He had said it in the voice he reserves for when Bucky’s having a hard time, for when he can’t tell left from right, whispers from screams. He didn’t mean anything by it, but here Bucky was, leg violently bouncing under him.
OR
A normal everyday activity sends Bucky deep into flashbacks and confusing memories, comfort ensues.

Most of the others moved on quickly. But Bucky was left behind. His days as the Winter Soldier plagued his nightmares, which didn’t end even when he was awake. Whereas the Avengers that were left moved on, his therapist had clicked her tongue and said, “I think you need more support.”
His heart drops. “W-what do you mean? Like— a hospital?”
Shrink shakes her head. “No, like group therapy.”
That’s where he meets her. Mei. A mystery, a ghost girl, someone who thaws the ice in his heart. When he’s with her, he can almost forget the way it felt when the electricity ran through his every nerve and dancing through the muscle down to the bone, ripping a scream from his chest; the unbridled fear that tugged at his chest and exploded. Almost. To her, he’s just James Smith, a normal guy who has problems and sometimes can’t breathe because it feels like Thor’s hammer is sitting on his chest and he can’t fucking move, can’t help but watch as memories flash across his eyes, stained with blood that seeps into the corners and into every somewhat happy moment.
Well. He’s not the only one that’s hiding secrets.

“I can’t,” he says, surprising himself. “You have a life to live. And I have mine.” She looks at him with sad eyes and for some unknown reason what he tells her suddenly seems right.
“Must you go?” She sighs as he nods.
“There is someone who needs me more. Someone who is hurting because of me. I cannot leave him without saying goodbye. Not even for you,” He answers, and leans down to kiss her on the cheek. “I am sorry.” And as he leaves, he knows Peggy will understand, she always does.

He crashed into his room through the window. He could feel the floor, but he couldn’t see it. The world had gone silent. Was this where he was going to die?
“May! May I need help,” Peter called out, but he felt far away from his body. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, he knew there was no coming back from this. His body hit the floor, but he was already gone.

Bucky stood in his small kitchen, staring at the untouched breakfast on the counter. The toast was cold by now, the butter having congealed into an unappetizing layer. His stomach churned, not with hunger, but with the familiar knot of anxiety that food always brought. With a sigh, he pushed the plate away and poured himself another cup of black coffee, hoping the bitter liquid would stave off the gnawing emptiness inside him.

Food had always been a struggle for Bucky. Even before the war, he was used to giving his portions to his sisters or Steve. They needed it more. During the war, rations were low, and he learned to get by on very little. HYDRA loved to torment their Asset by denying food and playing mind games. Now, even though he was free, HYDRA's ghost still haunted him, controlling his every meal.
