David squeezed her fingers. “Oh, Gwen, you could never.”
Another deep breath, her eyes flicking between their entwined hands and David’s pretty eyes. “David, I like you,” she said firmly, stunned when the words came out coherent.
David blinked and smiled. “Why, I like you too, Gwen.”
Moron. Absolute moron. If Gwen didn’t know better, she would think David was doing this shit intentionally to fuck with her.

Max was alone again. He never expected to find a home at Camp Campbell, and he will never admit that he did, but now that camp is over... Max was alone. He was alone with a severely depressed mother, a house with moldy walls, and Mr. Honeynuts, his only friend in the cold neighborhood around him.
But when an incident leaves Max more alone than ever before, he finds solace in the scent of campfire smoke and sickeningly sweet smiles.

Gwen and David have not spoken for two years after leaving their jobs at Camp Campbell. There were many things left unsaid and Gwen refuses to return to the way they once were. David has moved on and is engaged about to be married to his new found partner, Amber. He has invited Gwen to be the maid of honor for his wedding, she cannot find it within herself to say no. “Someone tried calling the camp earlier. I know because the call forwarded to my cell at work and nearly got me fired. I checked the number and it was an area code I didn’t recognize. I tried to call it back and it sent me to Max’s voicemail. I don’t know why he tried to call the camp but it’s got me really concerned.”
David sat back, dumbfounded by the what he was hearing. The weight in his stomach pressed into his ribs and made him gasp for breath. Why would Max call the camp if he knew it was closed? Was he trying to get ahold of him or Gwen?
