“Charles, I…I can’t.” She struggles to get the words out as her chest heaves with every inhale. Her face is red and splotchy, fresh tear tracks glint in the light when she walks by. The bottom of her dress drags on the ground picking up dirt and grime.
“Can’t? Can’t what Nell?”
“I just…can’t. It’s too much. It’s wrong.” Her arm wraps around her waist as she brings her other hand to her forehead.

Nell hasn't been feeling right for a while now. Wearing dresses and frilly frocks makes her cringe in a way that they never have before. They make her uncomfortable and trapped as if she were a bird in a cage begging to be set free. She tries to wear them and tries to be what everyone sees her as, a lady. But she's not - not in the traditional sense anyway, and she can't help but wonder why she's different. One day it all just becomes too much and there is little she can do to stop herself from breaking.
