Scar spotted him from the distance, his steps slowing as he approached. Grian didn’t look up, but Scar could feel the tension radiating from him like the heat of the sand.
“Hey,” Scar called softly, stopping a few feet away. “You okay over there?”
Grian didn’t answer right away. He kept his eyes on the horizon, watching the sun sink into streaks of orange and purple. His fingers gripped his elbows tighter, his knuckles white.
“‘M fine,” Grian said eventually, the word clipped.
Scar rocked back on his heels, unsure of what to say. Grian wasn’t usually like this—withdrawn, quiet, almost bristling with some invisible pressure. When he got like this, one wrong word could set him off, but leaving him alone didn’t feel right either.

Summary
It was Christmas Eve, and Grian was going to throttle Scar. Those were two statements that logically should not have correlated with each other, but Scar—yet again—had somehow managed to find a way to defy any semblance of logic.
Grian’s surroundings ignored his murderous feelings with a cheery disregard, more focused on portraying an air of merry festivity. Cleverly hidden ochre froglights cast the room in a warm glow and limned the edges of the mug of eggnog Grian was holding. A plush moss carpet covered the floor, and the walls were made of oak wood paneling with a sandstone trim. Big, bright red bows lined the windowsills that framed a picturesque view of the sun setting over the outside landscape of ice and snow. A jukebox was playing music that could just barely be heard over the voices of the other Hermits in the room, a song about halls being decked with boughs of holly.
Maybe it was a bit of a stretch to pin the blame of Scar's existence onto Christmas, but—through Grian's reasoning—it was because of Christmas that Scar was wearing . . . that, and upsetting him. God, Grian needed a drink—well, another drink. He couldn't deal with all of this sober.

The door to the rest of the shop clicked then swung open. Grian turned to it immediately, a desperate chirp bursting from his lips without any consideration to how it might harm him. He just needed someone. Anyone. It didn't have to be flock anymore. He just needed a person, someone to hold him, someone to pet his feathers and soothe his crying instincts. Please.
A masked figure approached the cage, one of the shopkeepers, and they scoffed at him for a moment, standing just far enough beyond the bars that Grian couldn't reach them. He strained, stretching through the iron. All he wanted was a touch. Just a brush of fingers or....or something. Anything. Anything to keep him from falling apart, anything to stop him from being so alone.
The shopkeeper tossed a bag through the bars of the cage, then turned around and left without saying a word. Grian ignored it, pressing himself tightly up against the bars, chirping over and over and over again, begging them to come back, to stay with him. He couldn't be alone. Scared-alone-stay-stay-stay-please. But they ignored him. They always ignored him.
