    Summary

"I hate this," Kirk complained as he returned McCoy to the ground. "What a stupid situation. Tell me everything. What does she look like? How old is she? Does she really want to be with an alien?"

"You can ask her yourself, soon enough," McCoy grinned at him, his slightly crooked teeth and handsome face utterly charming. "C'mon, old boy, we have to fetch the water."

They picked up their jugs and made their way along the silvery path. The old fortress loomed larger ahead of them, perched on a cliff that hid a rare natural spring behind stone walls. They passed through the gate into a garden. It was a startling transition that Kirk had experienced on Earth in places like Palestine and Egypt when he traveled in his youth, the arid landscape suddenly bursting with life. Alien palms towered over them, filtering the red light of the night sky through blue-green leaves. Smells of fresh water and sweet flowers filled Kirk's lungs. His skin began to tingle with excitement.

Spock, he thought to himself. I'm going to marry an alien named Spock.

    Summary

On a Vulcan yet untouched by Surak's reforms, Stonn is hired on by the wealthy S'ch T'gai family to care for the family's pool, used for meditation and enhancing telepathy. He meant to perform his job admirably. He did not mean to get caught in the middle of a strange power struggle between husband and wife. And he certainly did not mean to enjoy being caught there.

    Summary

Perhaps there was something to what Spock had told him. Maybe Kirk would be comfortable here, despite the heat. There was a kind of peace here, even in such a busy place, the peace that spoke of an entire planet of peaceable people—peace with their neighbors; peace deliberately cultivated within themselves.

Here, perhaps, he could grieve for Edith the way she deserved. On the Enterprise there was no time to—not for her captain. No time he could ever be certain it was safe to let his defenses down, that no emergency might suddenly need him to be ready for action. Sam had died and he had barely reacted, so disconnected had he become from himself.

But Spock had told him that here, there was time enough for everything.
