Maybe what Sonic needs is to go on a run early in the morning to clear these thoughts from his head. In retrospect this line of thought makes sense! They were just hanging out, they’ve been on great terms recently and that friendliness has muddied their rivalry. Which Sonic does not mind of course! He’d much rather be Shadows friend then his enemy as they were when they first met. The first time they’d fought Sonic only barely managed to get the upper hand. Sonic’s just really happy that his greatest enemy has now turned into one of his closest friends. That’s all there is to it.

Summary
After being on Starfall Islands, Sonic's friends, true to their word, go off and explore the world on their own, which leaves Sonic alone in Tail's workshop to keep an eye on the Master Emerald and himself. Being left alone after the pain of Cyberspace is definitely a good idea.
Time has never ticked by slower. But, with the sudden run into Shadow under the stars, his life starts to pick up once more. But the sudden strange attitude Sonic has does not go unnoticed by the other hedgehog.
With a newfound motivation, and the tired old threat of a new plan from Dr. Eggman once again, Sonic is ready to battle him once again, even if he doesn't have his friends right near him at the moment. Well, except for the three strange friends standing around him as they stare at the documents regarding Eggman's new plans.

There’s a hand on his shoulder, barely making contact. A red gauntlet glows around the wrist.
Sonic blinks, the pain having evaporated so fast he feels almost weightless. “Shadow?”
Shadow’s breathing heavily. “Problem.”
The retrieval of the ancient tech Shadow (and Sonic, in tow) has been sent to uncover takes a turn for the worst. In this case, the “worst” means… becoming physically and inextricably linked to each other. For the foreseeable future.
