Gale knelt. He put hand near mouth. Warm air brushed skin—still here. Chest rose, fell, slow, weak. Arms thin, ribs sharp. Not strong. Not safe. Left to die.

Gale didn't have a problem with Astarion, per se.
It was just that he and Astarion never quite meshed. They were too different, and always ended up at odds and on separate sides of the room. They had not a single thing in common, apart from sharing a group of friends and the occasional bottle of red. There were no hard feelings, but they just didn't quite get each other, and that was fine.
What wasn't fine was Astarion turning up last-minute, unexpectedly and unannounced.
