Xie Lian wasn’t even sure who he was being sacrificed to, this time. In the past, it was almost always shared—overheard before the knife plunged, for example. But tonight, he was on a cold altar, waiting for the eventual end, and had roughly no idea why the mortals were so scared, so nervous, yet so relieved. On the other hand, he had never been granted the sight of something so beautiful before his slaughter—the wings of a silver butterfly danced right over his face, and landed gently on his nose, where blood slowly dripped. Xie Lian thought it was a very precious goodbye. Or apology, maybe. He found that he didn’t mind.

“Ah- I’m ok. Don’t worry,” Xie Lian stuttered as he saw the man, looking even more handsome up close, “It’s just a scratch, nothing serious.”
“How can it be nothing?” The young man asked, his smile slipping for a second before going back to how it was, “Let me take care of your injuries. You got hurt because of me after all.” He said as his smile turned into a teasing grin, now looking more genuine.
Xie Lian’s face turned red again, hearing this from the man himself, “Ah, you shouldn’t…”
“Gege, I insist,” The young man said with a charming grin, clearly not taking “No” for an answer.
Or: 5 times “General Hua” got hurt and San Lang got upset about it, and the one time it was the way around.

The problem with wandering the world while lacking both spiritual power *and* luck is that, when things go wrong, they go *very* wrong. This isn't exactly news --- it's a lesson Xie Lian learned long ago and is merely re-remembering from time to time --- but it is also one becoming abundantly clear when a storm catches him without shelter.
It's a rare --- impossible? --- stroke of luck that he finds a rather unusual shrine in the wild. And how convenient, for him to stumble across a red-clad youth with a penchant for telling stories and knowledge of affairs both Heavenly and ghostly, too!
