Summary
Maomao is wearing a slightly disgruntled expression when she and Jinshi sit down to breakfast. Jinshi does his best to hide any signs of his amusement. His beloved wife has been having a particularly trying few weeks, after all.
Suiren gives a sympathetic chuckle at the sight of them. "A rough night?" she asks, shooting Maomao an understanding look. Jinshi can see that she's prepared a number of light options for the meal again, the kind that might tempt a pregnant woman who isn't feeling especially well.
Or, Maomao is pregnant. Things don't go exactly as she expected.

"These are meant for short term consumption," she says, not even trying to hide the disapproval in her voice. She sets the heat suppressants aside on a small table in his chambers in the Western Capital. The bottle of them is almost empty. She shudders to think how many he's had to go through to hide himself for so long. "They're poisonous if you take them for too long. Surely the Imperial doctor told you that."
Jinshi's eyes won't quite meet hers. "I don't recall," he says evasively. The way he won't look at her gives Maomao the distinct impression that the Imperial doctor might not actually know. It occurs to her to wonder how many people do, but she's not sure she actually wants the answer.
Or, Maomao learns another one of Jinshi's secrets.
