Fox Mulder doesn't know why or how his new partner gets under his skin the way he does. First, in a terrible, annoying way...then in a way that's actually really nice. He never thought his defenses would be brought so low by someone he knows he can't trust.

“Glad you saved me now, huh?” Mulder looks just about ready to hit Alex again, but Scully says something sharp and quiet to him and puts a hand on his elbow. Alex tries not to look at him too hungrily. It’s been more than a year since he saw Mulder and he can’t help cataloging his face, the narrow shape of his shoulders, his big hands even where they’re a little beat up from—well, from beating Alex up. He mostly looks the same, maybe a little more tired than Alex remembers—but then, the last time Alex looked at Mulder for a long time, they were kissing with wine-stained lips while Alex planned his escape. “You look good.” Alex can’t help saying it, but he manages to put a sneer into his voice because it’s pretty clear how Mulder feels about him now.
“You look like shit,” Mulder tells him. “Stupid goddamn haircut.”
