“Enlighten me, Odysseus. What do you value most?” Patience was a waning thing in Zeus’ tone, the god leaning in close and as smothering as the humid front of a storm. A strong hand grasped Odysseus’ jaw, bringing in the king nose to nose to with a god who now stood to scale with the man atop the deck.
The unblinking eyes of his crew and the electric gaze of a king upon him, nowhere to run and none to outwit. To persuade? Odysseus raised his chin in Zeus’ grasp, shrugging off his tattered tunic from his shoulder, “There are many roads to settle a debt owed, no?”
The fingertips digging into his jaw slackened for but a moment, the gall of a mortal making Zeus briefly falter before he spoke, “Persuade me then.”

You can probably guess what that price is, considering this is Zeus we're talking about.
Except, the price goes deeper than Odysseus thought. After all, he never clarified exactly what he meant by raising the child as his own, and the gods do love their word games.

All the next day, he waits for the explosion.
He tenses when Knives wakes up for breakfast and calmly eats an omelet beside him at the table. He feels this heavy misery when Rem kisses the top of his head and calls him a good boy before piling them into the minivan to go to school. When Knives asks to borrow a pencil in their algebra class, Vash nearly cries and confesses right there. But he manages to keep his cool, and by the time the next night has arrived, he feels like he dodged a bullet. Knives doesn’t know what he did.
He’s dressed in pajamas again, thinking of tying his arm to the bedpost so he doesn’t go wander back into Knives’ room, but his door swings open behind him. Vash turns and nearly chokes on his own heart. “Knives?”
That shy look is there, the one only Vash sees. Knives tries his best all the time to be what he calls ‘normal’ around other people, to keep his cool and not seem strange. Vash knows how sensitive his brother is, though. How often he cries. When he feels nervous about things or even scared, he can be such a baby. Vash teases him, but he loves his brother so much.
They take care of each other. It’s how it’s always been, but… Vash did something so evil.
