Summary
Owen smelled like death. He looked like death. He was a harbinger of death, not to be touched, and yet a pale hand closed around his own and shook it firmly where he stood at the tall door to the Mayor of Oakhurst’s office, a welcoming gesture he hadn’t experienced since the disease took hold over a decade ago.
“Come on in, friend,” the man said, holding the door open to allow Owen to pass. Owen’s whole arm felt like it had been flooded with warmth, and it took him a second to realise that the kind words had been meant for him.
Or: Five times Louis touched Owen without fear, and one time Owen did the same

Summary
Nobody had listened to Avid when he tried to warn them of danger.
He'd told them of vampires - of sharpened canines and eyes of snakes, voices like honey and appearances given by the gods themselves. All he received in turn was mockery; turned shoulders and whispers behind his back.
Crazy, they called him. Paranoid, if they were being kinder.

Summary
Sometimes, days like this where Owen woke up gasping, tears in the corners of his eyes, a half-remembered dream of loss lingering, he wished sleep wasn’t the only respite he had. Because, while some nights, he woke up feeling cold the moment he entered the land of the living, awoken from a dream where Louis was there, alive, the quietness of being with another different from the silence of isolation, far more comfortable. On those days, it hurt to be awake, but sleep’s comfort lingered.
On days like this, the only thing that lingered from sleep was heartache.
But, even when sleep wasn’t a comfort, it was more comfortable, closer to what he was used to, than being awake, than forcing his sluggish body through the motions.
