Summary
Devon looks at Mark and, for a moment, she sees a six-year-old sniffling miserably as she carefully cleans his scraped knee; she sees a seven-year-old weeping over the makeshift grave for their dead dog; she sees a ten-year-old proudly showing her the handful of worms he dug up from the front yard.
And then she blinks and the world refocuses to the present: adult Mark, wan and motionless on the couch.

Summary
It starts with a nosebleed.
Helly hovers nearby, the image of blood smeared on his cheek still fresh in her mind. Miss Huang's voice fades to a dull hum as her gaze catches on Mark's hand, his fingers wrapped around the edge of the desk. Her mind immediately flashes to exactly where that hand was not even an hour ago, and she's sure her face is flushed as she recalls how wonderful he made her feel.
Everything since she returned to the severed floor has been a nightmare that she can’t escape, but this. This is one good thing. Something that belongs just to her and Mark.
Something that no one can take away from her.
But then Miss Huang suddenly calls out Mark's name, her voice shrill with panic. When Helly looks at him, his face is paler than it should be, his gaze vacant, and a thick tendril of fear slithers through her veins.

or, Mark forgets bit by bit.

Summary
It’s the third time Devon has watched her sister’s head collide with cold, ceramic kitchen tile.
She wonders if the occurrence ever becomes normal. She wonders if one day, she’ll visit Mark and, when the fall inevitably happens, she’ll react logically, not viscerally. She’ll laugh it off, quip something along the lines of “You alright, m’lady?” and retrieve an ice pack from a well-stocked freezer.
In which Devon attempts to support her transgender sister as they grow up together.
