    Summary

Two years after a rogue turncoat agent tears HYDRA apart, exposing SHIELD's existence to the public and nearly bringing the agency down in a hurricane of scandal, SHIELD scientists find Captain America in the ice and revive him.

Wanting Captain America's endorsement, SHIELD appoints Steve as Captain of their specialized HYDRA-hunting unit, STRIKE Team Alpha. Which would be great except that STRIKE Alpha is in disarray due to one member being said former HYDRA turncoat agent, a highly uncooperative and incommunicative... super soldier?

Eager to connect with the one person this century who might be like him in more ways than one, Steve attempts to bring the Soldier more fully onboard the team. But aside from his two year revenge stint, the Winter Soldier is still fresh out of 70 years of captivity with HYDRA, crazier than a bucket of bats trying to imitate human behavior (in fact a bucket of bats might have slightly more success), and full of secrets whose existence he won't even begin to acknowledge. He also refuses to so much as take his goggles off around anyone from SHIELD. Not even during *brunch.* As Steve gets closer to the Soldier, he starts putting together the pieces of a very worrying puzzle.

    Summary

Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a man.

To break him, you must first shatter his body—again and again and again. Then, you take his mind, his will, his name. You strip him down to something unrecognisable, reshape him into something he was never meant to be. Survival is its own kind of cruelty, and some wounds don’t heal. Some don’t even scar.

Because war doesn’t just take—it remakes. It chews men up and spits them out as something else: hollowed out, stitched haphazardly, and left to stumble forward. No side is ever truly victorious, not when the battlefield becomes a graveyard, and the survivors are left carrying its ghosts. No matter who wins, the cost is always the same: death. the weight of what can never be undone.

    All wars end the same.

    -
This is the story of Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, and the Howling Commandos. The war they fought. The men they lost. The scars they carried. The love that blossoms, even in the darkest of places, far behind enemy lines.

Before the ice. Before the Winter Soldier.

Before it all got worse .

Therapist Helmut Zemo works to break out the Winter Soldier from inside Hydra.

“If someone– If a superior told you to jump from a bridge, would you?”
Z barely had enough time to finish the sentence before The Soldier spoke.

    “Yes.”

“Would you stop a superior from jumping before you?”

    “Yes.”
“Okay. What makes those two scenarios different?”

    “Me.”

    Summary

"We're going to be alcoholics by the time we're thirty," Sokka sighed.

"You think we'll live to be thirty?" Zuko asked, honestly thrilled. Sokka had pretty good instincts. Perhaps Zuko should reevaluate his long term goals. He could start by having long term goals.

A more likely alternative was that Sokka was just a hopeless optimist. It just went to show, you never truly saw another man until you stood shoulder to shoulder against a fleet of war balloons intent on raining death upon the city you loved.

Zuko was just a normal guy with normal interests. He liked theatre, burglary, crotchety ostrich horses, watching the Blind Bandit crush her opponents in a glorious display of skill and violence... just your standard banished prince things. It wasn't his fault he kept stumbling into rebellions and uncovering long-buried secrets. Fine, maybe freeing the prisoners was on him, but he was completely innocent of all other treason. Zuko was his father's loyal son. He'd never betray his nation.

    Or:
Uncle Iroh took a more creative approach to fostering Zuko's appreciation of other cultures. Now it's everyone's Problem.
