Summary
Knuckles understands his role in his new family very well. He is the eldest son. He helps shoulder the responsibilities of his parents, and he protects his younger brothers no matter what. For someone of his strength and skill, this should not be a problem. He was made for this job, and he greatly enjoys it.
But he doesn't know what to do when the threat isn't something he can punch or even see. He doesn't know how to make his brother happy when Sonic is holding so tightly onto a love that will surely ruin him.

Sonic blinked a few times to clear his vision, his mind still reeling both from the impact and from the confusion of what the hell just happened. When his vision cleared, he stared in disbelief at the face in front of him. The face of the person that he'd punched into the moon. The person who had helped him save the world. The person who had tried to kill Tom. The person who he hadn't been able to stop thinking about for days. The person who was for some reason attacking him? "Shadow?" Sonic asked shakily. "You're alive?" A brief look of confusion flashed across Shadow's face for just a moment before he returned to his usual angry expression, accompanied by a few sparks of his signature red lightning.
"Who are you? How do you know my name?"

Escaping wasn’t an option—especially not after he had his memories taken upon his arrival.

“Why are you leaving?” Shadow desperately asked.
Sonic couldn’t even return his gaze. “You… wouldn’t understand. I have to return before—“
“Before what?” It sounded like a beg, a plea even. “You’re the first one I’ve seen that looks like me. First you can’t tell me your name, and now you can’t even look at me?”
The last words stung far more than the blue hedgehog ever would’ve liked. “I…I’m sorry.”
