Instead of adding Bash to his property title, Gilbert in a bit of a life-crisis mode bequeaths the entirety of the farm to his brother figure, effectively making himself homeless. Luckily, there is a local family who takes boarders, and it’s no trouble on the Cuthberts seeing how fond Marilla was of his father in their youth, so he finds comfort in asking her to take him in.
The only downside is sharing a residence with his academic rival of over 5 years, the ever confusing and infuriating Anne Shirley-Cuthbert, and as they come of age things get… complicated.
(A somewhat re-imagination of season 3, as the divergence would take place the final episode of season 2. Many aspects of season 3 will remain. But mostly slightly aged up AU, in-canon world)

Summary
Oscar decided that the best remedy for his lonely heart was to spend the evening drinking at a bar and wallowing over the abundant lack of options for his love life. He maybe overindulged but who could blame him? It's not as if there was a chance in hell of finding a good man in the bar tonight.
There's swearing, drinking, and talk of sex but nothing at all that I think warrants an M rating. This fic contains spoilers for the movie Fight Club, which is not a sentence I ever thought I'd write. These two really just need to shut up and kiss in like 90% of interactions. It would fix them.
