“Max,” Christian’s voice cut sharp into his ear. “Leave it. Get back to the medical car for your own checks. Do you hear me?”
But Max couldn’t. He couldn’t look away. He watched as Charles’s gloved hand twitched against the stretcher strap, a feeble movement that barely counted as resistance.
“Charles,” Max whispered, but the name was eaten by the crowd noise, by the scream of the tractor backing away.
The medics loaded him into the medical car. Cameras zoomed tighter. Charles’s helmet tilted just enough for Max to catch a glimpse of his faceplate through the visor, pale, eyes closed.
Something inside Max snapped.

Lena forgets all about the stars and how pretty they are at the sight of Kara laughing, because even in the bad torch lighting, Kara is prettier than all the stars combined. Something twists in Lena’s stomach. She wants to lean forward and press her lips against Kara’s, and she almost does, but then she realizes what she’s doing and she stops herself just in time before Kara notices anything.

Kara’s face grew clouded. She hit a button and set the phone down. “You’re on speaker phone, Alex.”
“What’s going on?” Lena asked slowly.
Alex sighed on the other end of the line. “First of all, Lena, I’m glad you’re okay. From what the DEO can find, the bomb set off at L Corp did a lot of structural damage, but didn’t kill anyone or cause any major damage to the area around it. We have Kara to thank for that.” Kara blushed and ducked her head, mumbling about paramedics. “But something else has come up and… well, I’m gonna send it to you, okay?”
Kara grabbed her phone as a notification dropped down, indicating Alex had just sent a link to something. “It may be nothing,” Lena distantly heard Alex continuing, “but it might also be very, very bad.”

The paparazzi have struck gold. Lena Luthor’s safety becomes a high priority, and Supergirl and the DEO spare no expense trying to keep her safe.
No one thinks to do the same for Kara Danvers until it’s too late.
