Summary
A-Yao's mother falls deathly ill, but he cannot afford to buy medicine for her. Fortunately, his Shifu, who runs a fortune-telling stand beside the brothel, gives A-Yao some advice. He tells A-Yao that he should sell off the pearl his father gifted to his mother. He should use the money from it to buy her freedom from the brothel. Then he should become a guest disciple of the Gusu Lan Sect. His stipend will be enough to pay for his mother's medicine.
"But then how will I get acknowledged by my father without the pearl?" A-Yao asks. His Shifu sighs and says, "A far greater destiny awaits you if you go instead to Cloud Recess." So Cloud Recess is where A-Yao goes to save his mother.
Or: what if Meng Yao and Lan Xichen grew up together as kids in Cloud Recess?

“A-Yao,” Lan Xichen says. It sounds like a swear and a prayer all at once. He falls onto his back, pulling Meng Yao against his chest. “My sweet A-Yao, I want to chain you to me and keep you forever.”
If anyone else said that, Meng Yao would leave a scratch across their face deep enough to scar. Instead, his whole being aches with want for the same, and he realizes in a hazy cloud of dread that he might actually be falling in love. Truly falling in love. The kind that there is no coming back from.

Alternative story-line where Lan Xichen breaks down Meng Yao's walls as they fall in love, just as Lan Wangji broke down Wei WuXian's in canon. A healthier, stronger relationship ensues.

During the Sunshot Campaign, the Two Lords had wed and consolidated their power and authority over their newly joined territory and then shown up to the battlefield astride dragons to win what should have been an unwinnable war. Lan Xichen, the Lord of Jade, was beautiful and possessed a brilliant tactical mind; Nie Mingjue, the Lord of Blades, fierce and formidable.
